Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) for Small Businesses
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the part of SEO that gets your content used as the answer in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets and voice results. It relies on the same index and signals as classic SEO: crawlable pages, direct answers to real questions, original expertise and trust. We run it inside the SEO engagement.
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your content the thing a search engine quotes when it answers a question directly. On Google, that means AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets and "People also ask". On phones and smart speakers it means the spoken answer.
Here is the part most agencies leave out: there is no separate AEO algorithm. Google's AI features use retrieval against the same index as regular Search. In its May 2026 guide to generative AI features, Google said plainly that optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."
So AEO is a goal, not a discipline. The goal is worth chasing. It just shouldn't come with a second invoice. That's why it lives inside our SEO, AEO and GEO engagement and not beside it.
How does Google pick the content it uses in an AI Overview?
Google doesn't publish the recipe, but its guidance and how these features behave point to a few requirements:
- The page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. If you've blocked snippets with
nosnippetormax-snippet, or the page isn't indexed, it can't be used. This is the first thing we check. - The page has to actually answer the question. AI features pull passages that resolve the query. A page that circles a topic for 600 words before getting to the point is harder to use than one that answers in the first two sentences.
- The content has to be worth citing. Google calls this "non-commodity content": something beyond what every other page says. Your pricing logic, your process, your local knowledge, your real examples.
- The site has to be trusted on the topic. Same signals as ranking. Depth on the subject, clear authorship, a real business behind it, and other sites referring to you.
Notice what is not on the list: llms.txt files, "AI-friendly" chunking, rewriting everything in a chatbot style, or special markup. Google's guide says you don't need any of those for its AI features.
What AEO work actually looks like
This is the checklist we work through on a typical small-business site.
1. Build a question inventory
We collect the questions your buyers actually ask, from:
- Search Console queries that are phrased as questions
- "People also ask" boxes for your core terms
- Your sales and support inbox (the most underrated keyword tool there is)
- Reviews, both yours and competitors'
- The follow-up questions AI Overviews and AI Mode suggest for your topic
A medspa might end up with questions like "how long does lip filler last", "is microneedling painful" and "what should I avoid before Botox". A roofer might get "how do I know if I need a new roof or a repair" and "does homeowners insurance cover hail damage".
2. Map each question to one page
Every important question gets a home. Either an existing page answers it, or we create a section or page that will. Two pages answering the same question compete with each other, so we consolidate.
3. Restructure for direct answers
The pattern is simple and it works:
- An H2 phrased as the question, in the customer's words
- A two to four sentence answer directly underneath, with no warm-up
- The detail, reasoning, examples and caveats after that
Before: "Our Approach to Roof Assessments" followed by three paragraphs about the company's history.
After: "Do I need a roof repair or a full replacement?" followed by "If the damage is limited to one area and the rest of the roof is sound, a repair is usually enough. Widespread granule loss, sagging or repeated leaks point to replacement. Here's how we assess it."
That rewrite is good for a human, good for a featured snippet, and good for an AI Overview. That's the point.
4. Add the proof only you have
Answers that sound like everyone else's don't get chosen. We work with you to add the specifics: what you see in your shop, your actual process steps, before-and-after examples, what customers usually get wrong. If you have a method, we name it. Named frameworks are easier to reference than generic advice.
5. Clean up the technical layer
AEO fails quietly when the basics are broken. We check:
- Indexing status of the pages that should be answering questions
- Snippet controls and robots directives
- Important content rendered in the HTML, not hidden behind tabs that need JavaScript to load
- Semantic HTML: real headings, lists and tables, not styled divs
- Duplicate pages splitting your signals
More on this in technical SEO.
6. Use structured data where it earns its keep
Structured data is not required for AI features, and there is no special AI schema. But it still helps Google understand who you are and qualifies you for rich results in regular Search. For most small businesses that means Organization or LocalBusiness, Product or Service where relevant, Article on blog posts, and BreadcrumbList sitewide.
A note on FAQ schema: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results for all sites in May 2026. (source) Visible Q&A sections on the page still matter because that's the shape AI answers take. The markup itself is now optional.
How do you measure AEO?
Honestly, imperfectly. But better than it was a year ago.
- Search Console. Google has begun rolling out generative AI performance reports to a subset of sites, showing impressions and which pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. If your property has it, we use it.
- Featured snippets and "People also ask". Rank trackers can flag when you own these.
- Scheduled manual checks. We keep a fixed list of 20 to 50 priority questions and check them on a regular cadence, logging whether an AI Overview appears and whether you're cited.
- Business outcomes. Calls, form fills and booked appointments from organic search. Visibility that doesn't produce leads is a vanity metric with better branding.
What good looks like: over a few months, more of your priority questions show you in the snippet or the AI Overview sources, impressions on question queries climb, and organic leads move with them.
What to watch out for
- "AEO packages" priced separately from SEO. Ask for the list of activities that differ from SEO. If the list is shorter than the invoice, you have your answer.
- Proprietary "AI visibility scores". A score you can't reproduce is a sales tool.
- Content chopped into tiny chunks. Google says its systems handle multi-topic pages fine. Write for people.
- Guarantees. Nobody controls which sources an AI Overview uses on a given day.
Where AEO fits with everything else
AEO is one face of the same work. Generative engine optimization covers ChatGPT, Perplexity and the other assistants. Content strategy decides which questions you should own in the first place. And if you're not sure where you stand today, an SEO audit is the right starting point.
For the longer version of why we refuse to sell AEO as a separate line item, read AEO is just SEO, and Google confirmed it.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
Not in any way that justifies a separate budget. Google's own guide to AI search features says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. AEO is a useful name for one goal (being the answer), but the work is SEO work.
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there is no special schema.org markup for its AI features and structured data isn't required to appear in them. Standard markup like Organization, LocalBusiness, Product and Article still helps Google understand your pages and qualify for rich results.
Does FAQ schema still help?
Less than it used to. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026. Writing real questions and answers on the page still helps, because that is the format AI features quote. The markup is optional and harmless.
Can I see whether I appear in AI Overviews?
Partly. Google has started rolling out generative AI performance reports in Search Console to some sites, showing impressions and which pages appear. For everything else we run scheduled manual checks on your priority questions and log the results.
How long does AEO take?
Restructuring existing pages that already rank can show up in snippets and AI Overviews relatively quickly, because those pages are already trusted. Pages that don't rank yet need the normal SEO groundwork first, which usually takes several months.
